More children in the United States are being diagnosed with autism and ADHD than at any point on record, and the pace of that increase has surprised even the researchers who track it. According to the CDC’s most recent Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network report, roughly 1 in 31 eight-year-olds in the U.S. — about 3.2% — is now identified with autism spectrum disorder, up from 1 in 150 when the agency began tracking the condition among children born in the early 1990s. ADHD has followed a similar trajectory, with national survey data showing several million children currently carrying the diagnosis.
